New from David Perron’s humble outfit in southern Minnesota: Round Bale Recordings very recently added two releases to its gradually expanding catalog.
The first is called Letters to Friends of the Late Darcy O’Meara from Australian writer and sound artist Matthew Revert, who has otherwise collaborated with Vanessa Rossetto and designed plentiful covers for books and music releases. Samples from the album (listenable below) sound like a natural continuation of Revert’s general preoccupation with obscure narratives buoyed by the written word (to wit: he speaks languidly in a lo-fi shroud about a parade that had “not yet acknowledged itself as such” on one track, and the “Dear XXX” format of each track’s title is suggestive of the deep conceit at play throughout the album). The second release comes from Recital label head Sean McCann, and the music therein just precedes the days when the LA-based composer began work on his Music for Private Ensemble. Fountains was originally released in 2010, and as McCann described to Perron, he was “hell-bent on recording an ambient ‘masterwork’” at the time, but he ultimately abandoned notions of a double-LP in favor of hastening his Private Ensemble work. The Round Bale reissue of Fountains thusly comes with the extra tracks that nearly made it McCann’s desired ambient mammoth. (No, YOU’RE tearing up while listening to it!)
