Throwing Snow's new album Embers out on Houndstooth in January

Bristol’s Throwing Snow a.k.a. Ross Tones works with familiar sounds, but his material can be hard to pin down. “Cosms,” the first track released ahead of his upcoming Embers LP, is characteristic. With overlapping arpeggiating synths that twist and contort and evolve in ways that sometimes feel random, it has a sense of unpredictability that isn’t typical of house and its various subgenres. By the end of it, you’d be hard-pressed to call it house at all.

In that sense “Cosms” is the continuation of the series of EPs Throwing Snow released last year, which abandoned the pop vocalists and structures that watered down some nimble production work on his debut Mosaic. Thankfully, it appears that Embers continues to develop the EPs’ laser-sharp aesthetic and structural adventurousness, ditching the guest vocalists entirely. It drops January 20 via Houndstooth.
